The two toughest things to put a value on are time and expertise. I consider myself to be a humble man. Unfortunately, humility doesn’t always translate into properly valuing my services. I know my expertise saves my clients a lot of money, but my lack of time is becoming a problem.
Appointments take precedent, then texts, then calls, then emails.
Email requests are the biggest problem. I have found myself falling weeks behind on answering emails and days behind on answering texts.
I have found the phrase "I have a quick question" is rarely true. If I'm wrong, many of these answers can cost you a lot of money so they are rarely a quick answer. Most "quick questions" take 10 minutes to research and 10 minutes to answer. I average around 20 “quick question” emails per day and that can take about 3-5 hours to return all those emails.
I have been very generous with my time over the years. Going forward, I will be tracking my time on these types of requests that require my expertise. My billing rate is $240 per hour, and bill in 10-minute increments.
Due to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act signed in July 2025, I expect many more taxpayers to itemize their tax returns. High income earners in high tax states like California will likely file a Schedule A receive unexpected higher refunds! As you see above, itemized returns are an additional charge.
